귀족이나 특권 계층이 아닌 보통 사람들을 뜻합니다. 일반 사회 계층의 사람들을 가리킵니다.

주로 역사나 문학적 배경에서 귀족 등과 구분할 때 사용합니다. 일상 대화에서는 거의 쓰이지 않고 옛스럽거나 무례하게 느껴질 수 있습니다.
