주류에 주스나 소다, 시럽 등 다른 재료를 섞어 만든 술을 의미한다. 여러 가지가 섞여 있는 혼합물이라는 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

일반적으로 술집, 레스토랑, 파티 등에서 마시는 혼합주를 의미함. 'cocktail party', 'cocktail menu', 'shrimp cocktail' 등의 표현에도 자주 등장함. 무알코올 음료인 'mocktail'과 혼동하지 않도록 주의.
