燃料として燃やされる固い黒色または濃い茶色の岩です。発電や産業用の熱にも使われます。

素材として話すときは基本的に数えません（例：'a pile of coal'）。よく使う表現：'coal mine'（炭鉱）、'coal miner'（炭鉱夫）、'coal-fired power plant'（石炭火力発電所）。『charcoal』とは違うので注意してください。
