禁止されていたり許されていないため、他人に知られないようにひそかに行われること。公的に見せてはいけない活動などに使われる。

ややフォーマルで、違法または疑わしい活動（'clandestine meeting'など）に使うことが多い。日常会話では「秘密の」などが使われる。
