어떤 사건이나 상황에 영향을 주는 조건이나 환경을 말함.

주로 복수형(상황들)로 전체 환경이나 조건을 나타낼 때 사용됨. 공식적이고 격식 있는 표현. 자주 쓰는 구는 '어떤 상황에서도', '상황 변화' 등.

We met by circumstance, not by plan.

우리는 계획이 아니라 **상황**에 의해 만났다.

The difficult circumstance made it hard to finish the work.

어려운 **상황** 때문에 일을 마치기가 힘들었다.
