完全には燃え切っておらず、まだ熱を持っている木炭や石炭の小さなかけら。火事や暖炉のあとによく見られる、黒くてもろい残りです。

主に文学や物語の中で使われる単語です。「ash（灰）」よりも形や熱が残っている点が特徴です。「シンデレラ」の語源にもなっています。
