Definition

小さくて黄色い鳴き鳥で、ペットとしてよく飼われます。また、周囲に危険をいち早く知らせる人を指すこともあります。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

通常は鳥を指しますが、「canary in the coal mine」のように最初に危険を察知して警告する人の比喩でも使われます。鳴き声が美しいことで有名です。
