طائر أصفر صغير غالبًا ما يُربى كحيوان أليف. يمكن أن يشير أيضًا إلى شخص يحذر الآخرين من الخطر أولاً.

في الإنجليزية تعني غالبًا الطائر، وأحياناً تستخدم مجازياً للشخص الذي يظهر الخطر أولاً ('canary in the coal mine'). الجمع 'canaries'.
