サボテンは、太くて水分を蓄える茎と鋭いとげを持つ植物で、乾燥した暑い場所、特に砂漠などでよく育ちます。

「サボテン」は数えられる名詞で、「1本のサボテン」「2本のサボテン」などと言います。観葉植物や植物学でよく使われ、「多肉植物（succulent）」とは区別します。
