ヨーロッパでは主にタカ科の大型猛禽類、アメリカでは主にハゲワシなどの死肉を漁る鳥を指します。

イギリス英語ではノスリ、アメリカ英語ではハゲワシを指す場合があります。日常会話ではあまり使いません。
