「しみ」はインクや液体などによる汚れを指します。また、評判や名誉を傷つける出来事も指すことがあります。

主に「インクのしみ」など液体につく汚れ表現で使います。比喩的に名誉の傷にも。「a blot on his record」は「経歴の汚点」。「blot out」（覆い隠す）とは区別してください。
