Definition

এটি এমন একজন ব্যক্তি যিনি বিয়ে করার জন্য কাউকে কথা দিয়েছেন বা বাগদান হয়েছে; বাগদত্ত/বাগদত্তা বোঝায়।

Usage Notes (Bengali)

খুব আনুষ্ঠানিক বা সাহিত্যিক শব্দ; কথ্য বাংলায় সচরাচর ব্যবহার হয় না। 'বাগদত্ত'/'বাগদত্তা' আধুনিক শব্দ 'এনগেজড' বা 'ফিয়ান্সে'-এর চেয়ে বেশি দূর থেকে শোনা যায়।

Examples

She introduced her betrothed to the family.

সে তার **বাগদত্তকে** পরিবারে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিল।

His betrothed lives in another city.

তার **বাগদত্তা** অন্য শহরে থাকে।

They will wed next month; he is her betrothed.

তারা আগামী মাসে বিয়ে করবে; সে তার **বাগদত্ত**।

In the story, the princess defied her parents and ran off with her betrothed.

গল্পে রাজকন্যা তার বাবা-মাকে উপেক্ষা করে তার **বাগদত্ত**কে নিয়ে পালিয়ে যায়।

Few people use the word 'betrothed' these days—it sounds very old-fashioned.
