長い間トラブルや悩み、災いをもたらすものや人のこと。よく迷惑や困りごとの原因となる存在。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に文語や文学で使われ、日常会話ではあまり使いません。「the bane of my existence/life」は「人生最大の悩みの種」という意味で使います。
