Um autor é uma pessoa que escreve um livro, um artigo ou outro texto. Também pode referir-se a quem criou ou deu origem a um plano ou a uma ideia.

Na maior parte das vezes, 'author' refere-se a quem escreve livros. É mais formal e mais específico do que 'writer'. Também aparece em expressões como 'the author of the report' ou 'the author of the policy', em que significa criador, e não necessariamente um escritor literário.
