オークションとは、商品や物品を一番高い値段をつけた人に売る公開販売のことです。対面でもオンラインでも行われます。

『オークションを開催する』『オークションで入札する』『オークションに勝つ』という使い方が一般的です。『auction』は名詞が主ですが、動詞で使う場合『オークションにかける』という意味になります。『bid』（入札）と混同しないよう注意してください。
