Definition

アーチとは、橋や建物、門などで上の重さを支えるために使われる曲がった構造です。足の甲など、曲線状の形を指すこともあります。

建築や人体の話題でよく使われます。「the arch of the bridge」や「foot arch」などの表現に注意。「アーク」や接頭辞「arch-」とは異なります。フォーマルな場面でも用いられます。
