ある状況や目的、人にふさわしい、適切であるという意味です。主に行動や服装、言葉などがその場に合っている場合に使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

フォーマルや中立な場面でよく使われます。'appropriate for', 'appropriate to', 'it is appropriate to + 動詞'などの形で使われます。社会的なマナーや場面に合った服装にも頻出します。動詞の 'appropriate'（横領する）とは違う意味なので注意。
