人や物の見た目、印象のこと。また、誰かがどこかに現れたり出席したりすることも指す。

'first appearances'は最初の印象を意味し、'keeping up appearances'は体裁を保つこと。出席や登場など公な場面でよく使う。'apparition'（幽霊）とは区別すること。

First appearances can be deceiving.

最初の**外見**はあてにならないことがある。
