Definition

他人の子どもを自分の子として迎えること、または新しい考えや方法を取り入れること。

「adopt a child」は養子にする、「adopt a new policy」は新しい方針を採用する意味で使います。「adapt（適応する）」と混同しないようにしましょう。フォーマルでもインフォーマルでも使われます。

They decided to adopt a baby from abroad.
