被告とは、犯罪を犯したとして正式に訴えられている人を指します。特に法廷や裁判で使われる言葉です。

「被告」は法廷用語で、既に起訴された人を指します。「suspect」よりも正式で、「She accused him of lying.」のような動詞としての使い方には使いません。
