その場にいるはずの人がいないこと、または気が散って集中していないことを指す言葉です。形式的には「〜がなければ」という意味でも使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

'Absent from class'は学校などを休む場合に使う。'An absent look'はぼんやりした表情。法律やフォーマルな文章で'absent any...'は「〜がなければ」となる。'Absent-minded'は「うっかり者」という意味でよく使われる複合語。
