事件や犯罪、事故などを実際に見て、説明できる人。または裁判で証言できる人のこと。

法律やニュースの場面でよく使われます。「witnesses」は現場にいた人や、法廷で証言する人も指します。動詞の「witness（目撃する）」とは混同しないでください。

The police talked to two witnesses after the accident.

事故のあと、警察は２人の**証人**に話を聞いた。

There were no witnesses on the street at night.
