どなたですか誰ですか

Definition

誰かが来たときや電話を受けたときに、その人が誰かを確かめるために使う表現です。カジュアルな場面でよく使われます。

「どなたですか」は丁寧、「誰ですか」はカジュアルです。電話や玄関で使います。「どちら様ですか」も丁寧な言い方です。

Who is it? Someone is knocking on the door.

**どなたですか**？誰かがドアをノックしています。

She answered the phone and said, 'Who is it?'

彼女は電話を取って「**どなたですか**？」と言った。

When the bell rang, mom asked, 'Who is it?' before opening the door.

ベルが鳴ったとき、母はドアを開ける前に「**どなたですか**？」と尋ねた。

It's late. If someone comes, just ask 'Who is it?' before letting them in.
