複数の人やグループが同じ目標や賞、注目を得ようとして競い合うこと。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「vying」は「for」や「with」と一緒に使われ、ややフォーマルな表現。ニュースやビジネスシーンなどで使われる。カジュアルな競争なら「competing」を使う。
