कछुए ऐसे सरीसृप होते हैं जिनकी कठोर खोल होती है और वे पानी या जमीन पर रहते हैं। 'कछुए' एक से अधिक कछुए के लिए बोला जाता है।

यह बहुवचन है। अमेरिकी अंग्रेज़ी में 'turtles' जल और स्थल दोनों प्रकार की प्रजातियों के लिए है, जबकि ब्रिटिश में 'tortoise' (जमीन) और 'turtle' (पानी) को अलग करते हैं। आम जोड़: 'sea turtles', 'pet turtles'। 'tortoises' या 'terrapins' से भ्रमित न हों।
