몸이나 얼굴을 다른 쪽으로 돌리는 것뿐만 아니라, 문제가 있음을 알면서도 일부러 모른 척하는 것을 의미함.

비유적으로 사회적·도덕적 문제를 외면할 때 자주 쓰임. 'turn the other cheek'(폭력에 맞서지 않다)와 혼동하지 말 것.
