बेहद पीड़ादायक, कठिन या कष्ट देने वाला, जैसे टॉर्चर हो। ऐसी स्थितियों, अनुभवों या भावनाओं के लिए इस्तेमाल होता है, जिन्हें सहन करना बहुत मुश्किल हो।

Usage Notes (Hindi)

यह शब्द औपचारिक है और 'tortuous' (घुमावदार) से अलग है। आमतौर पर 'process', 'wait', 'experience', 'path' आदि के साथ प्रयोग होता है। भावनात्मक या शारीरिक पीड़ा के लिए भी इस्तेमाल होता है, सिर्फ शाब्दिक यातना के लिए नहीं।
