身体的または精神的に長く続く大きな苦しみや悩みのことです。
Usage Notes (Japanese)
主に文学や深刻な場面で使われる表現で、日常会話ではあまり使いません。「torments of guilt（罪悪感の苦しみ）」のように、感情的な痛みにも使われます。
