前進するための小さな安定した足場。登山などの物理的な場面や、新しい分野に進出する際の初期の小さな有利な立場にも使われる。

登山など実際の動作にも使えるが、ビジネスや新しい分野へ進出する時の比喩として「toeholdを得る」などの形でよく使われる。
