짚이나 갈대 등 식물로 덮은 지붕이나 그런 집을 말합니다. 주로 전통 가옥에서 볼 수 있습니다.

대부분 시골이나 옛날 건물의 지붕에만 사용하며, 'thatched cottage'(초가집)에서 많이 쓰입니다. 현대 건물에는 쓰지 않습니다.
