대치는 양측이 서로 양보하지 않아 진전이 없는 상황을 말하며, 서로 긴장하며 대립하는 경우도 포함됩니다.

정치, 경찰, 협상 등 긴장된 상황에서 자주 쓰입니다. 'armed standoff'는 무장 대치를 의미합니다. 'stand-offish'(냉담한)와 혼동하지 마세요.
