集団の中から特別な理由で一人や一つを選んで、特に目立たせたり扱ったりすること。良い意味でも悪い意味でも使う。

誰かを褒めたり、批判したりする時によく使われます。'single out for praise/criticism' のような形で使われ、ややフォーマルな表現です。
