Una vaina es una cubierta, a menudo de cuero o metal, que se usa para guardar o proteger algo largo y delgado, como un cuchillo, espada o cable. También puede referirse a cualquier capa protectora.

"Sheath" es formal o técnico. Suele referirse a la protección de cuchillos, espadas ("knife sheath"), pero también a coberturas en biología, tecnología ("wire sheath") o medicina. No lo confundas con "sheath dress" (vestido entallado), aunque viene de la misma idea de envoltura.
