अधिकतर बहुवचन रूप 'the shallows' में प्रयोग होता है। प्रकृति, यात्रा और मछली पकड़ने के संदर्भ में आम है। इसका उपयोग लोगों या विचारों के लिए नहीं होता। आम वाक्यांश हैं: 'shallow पानी में चलना', 'नाव उथले पानी में फँस गई'। कभी-कभी यह काव्यात्मक भी लगता है।
