Definition

少数の物や人が広い範囲にまばらに存在すること、または何かがいろいろな方向に散らばる過程。

「a scattering of applause」のように、規模が小さく、点在している様子を表す時によく使います。人や物、抽象的なことにも使えます。

There was a scattering of books on the table.
