Definition

誰かに対して正式な挨拶や良い願いを表す方法で、主に手紙やメールなどの書き言葉で使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

非常にフォーマルで、会話ではほとんど使いません。主に手紙やメールの冒頭で見かけ、現代では「greetings」や「hello」に置き換えられることが多いです。カジュアルな会話には適しません。
