今現在、その地位（王、女王、チャンピオンなど）にいる人や、現在主流となっているものを指します。

スポーツ（「reigning champion」）、王室の称号（「reigning king」）などでよく使われます。カジュアルな会話ではあまり使いません。「雨（rain）」とは別語です。

She is the reigning chess champion.
