文字通りは歯を抜くことですが、比喩的にきわめて大変なこと、嫌なこと、大きな努力が必要なことを表します（例：誰かに何かをさせる）。

主に口語的な表現で、比喩として使う場合はフォーマルでない場面が多い。「like pulling teeth」は人を説得する時など苦労を表す。正式な文書には不向き。
