厳しく言うのを控えたり、本心すべてを言わずに遠慮すること。主に比喩的に使われる表現。

会話や批評などで使い、'not pull any punches'だと遠慮せず率直に言う意味。直接的な攻撃ではなく、主に言葉や態度について使う。
