Definition

믿음이나 감정, 의도 등을 공개적으로 말하다. 진실 여부에 의심이 있을 때도 사용됨.

'say'나 'claim'보다 더 격식적이거나 문어적이다. 'profess ignorance/love/innocence/faith'처럼 자주 조합해서 쓰이며, 실제로 진심이 아닐 수도 있음을 내포한다. 일상 대화에서는 드물게 사용됨.

He professed his love for her.

그는 그녀에게 자신의 **사랑**을 **고백했다**.

She professed that she was innocent.

그녀는 자신이 결백하다고 **주장했다**.
