공기, 물, 땅 등에 화학물질, 쓰레기, 소음 등 특정한 것을 더해 더럽거나 해롭게 만드는 것.

대개 수동형으로 사용됨('~로 오염되다'). '화학물질로 오염되다', '소음으로 오염되다'처럼 주로 해로운 것이 더해질 때 쓴다. 격식 있는 표현.
