국가가 범죄자에게 형벌을 면제해 주는 공식적인 결정. 드물게 실수에 대한 용서의 뜻으로도 쓰인다.

'사면'은 주로 법적, 공적 상황에서 사용되며, '대통령 사면', '사면을 내리다'와 같이 쓴다. 일상적인 사과에는 적합하지 않다.

The president granted several pardons at the end of his term.
