国の西部、特にアメリカ合衆国の西部地域を指します。また、一般的に『西のほう』という意味でも使われます。

主にアメリカ英語で使われる口語的な表現です。たいてい『the』を付けずに使います（例：'I live out west'）。距離感や地域性を感じさせます。特に米国西部を指すことが多いですが、文脈によって他の国の場合もあります。
