主な活動のほかに何かをする場合、例えば副業や食事の付け合わせ、または秘密の関係を指します。

'work on the side' は副業、'fries on the side' は付け合わせ、'seeing someone on the side' は浮気の意味。状況によって意味が変わるので注意が必要です。フォーマルではありません。
