これまで述べたことと対照的な別の考えや事実、選択肢を紹介する時に使う表現です。

主に文章や論理的な会話で文頭に使われます。「on the one hand...」と対で使うとバランスよく対比ができます。カジュアルすぎる場ではあまり使いません。
