위험이나 문제가 있을 때 항상 주의하고 방어할 준비가 되어 있는 상태.

주로 'be/stay on guard' 형태로 사용되며, 일반적인 안전이나 경계를 나타낼 때 쓴다. 과도한 경계(편집증)와는 다르다.

The security guard is always on guard at night.

경비원은 밤마다 항상 **경계하는** 상태다.
