沖合は岸から離れた海の一部を指します。比喩的には、何かが間もなく起こりそうな状況にも使われます。

主に文学や海事、またはフォーマルな表現で使われます。'in the offing' は「間もなく起こりそう」という意味。日常会話ではあまり使われません。 'off' や 'offshore' と混同しないように。
