「mute」は何かの音を消す、または静かにすること。音楽では、音を和らげる楽器用の道具も指す。

日常会話ではデジタル機器の音消し（例：“She mutes herself on Zoom”）でよく使います。音楽では正式用語としてミュート（消音器）を指します。「mute」は「deaf（聞こえない）」とは違い、意図的に音を消す／小さくする意味です。
