Definition

ねずみを捕まえるのが得意な猫、特にそのために飼われている猫のことです。

主に猫について使い、ほかの動物にはほとんど使いません。農場や倉庫などで働く猫に使うことが多く、かしこまった単語ではなく親しみを込めて使われることがあります。「mouse」とは混同しないようにしましょう。
