大切なものや望ましいもの（尊敬・希望・運など）がごくわずかだけあること。

格式的・文学的文章で使われることが多い。「a modicum of patience」のように'of'とともに使う。量は少なくても重要であることを強調する。水や砂などの物質的な量には使わない。
